Clay Helton was born on June 24, 1972, in Gainesville, FL. He was born to Charles Kimberlin “Kim” Helton, a graduate assistant on the University of Florida football team. Later, Clay moved to Miami, Tampa Bay, and Houston areas with his family, and Kim Helton later coached at Miami University, Tampa Bay. To complete his studies, he went to Clements High School in Sugar Land, Texas, and graduated in 1990.
After remodeling in his first year of college, Clay began playing college football as a quarterback at Auburn. In 1993, he was transferred to Houston as his father was hired as the head coach at the university. In 1995, Helton enrolled at Duke University and became a graduate assistant. Helton joined his father at Houston to be running backs coach in 1997 and remained in that position until 1999, Kim Helton’s final season as head coach. USC coach Clay Helton was fired after posting 46-24 records into the 7th season.
